Chemical peels

A controlled exfoliation that resurfaces the top layer of skin. Light, medium, or deep, depending on what you're after.

Cost range

$100$600

The mechanism

What it actually does

Applies an acid solution that loosens and removes dead skin cells. The skin underneath looks brighter and more even, and over time, texture and pigment improve.

Vs. the truth

What the internet says

Peels are extreme and your face will fall off. Light peels are routine and gentle. Deep peels are a different category and usually a dermatologist's call.

What to expect

Realistic expectations

A light peel gives you a fresh-skin look for a few weeks. A series of medium peels can fade pigment and refine texture noticeably. Deep peels are surgical-level and not for general skincare.

Recovery timeline

Day by day

  1. Day 0

    Skin feels tight. Mild redness.

  2. Days 2 to 4

Peeling begins. Don't pick. Moisturize, sunscreen, and patience.

  3. Days 5 to 7

Most peeling done. Skin looks fresh and slightly pink.

  4. Weeks 4 to 6

Time for the next peel if you're doing a series.

How it works in plain English

Acids loosen the bonds that hold dead skin cells together. A light peel removes the very top layer, the kind that makes your skin look dull. A medium peel goes a bit deeper to address pigment and fine lines. A deep peel reaches well into the dermis and is a serious medical procedure.

Most people want a light or medium series, not a deep peel. The right one for you depends on your skin type, your concerns, and how much downtime you can afford.

What I'd want you to know going in

Peels and active ingredients don't mix. Stop your retinoids and exfoliating acids the week before, and ease back in slowly afterward. Sunscreen is critical for the month after.

If your skin is darker, ask specifically about your provider's experience with darker skin tones. Some peels carry more pigmentation risk for richer melanin, and the wrong choice can produce dark spots that take months to fade.

A short check

Is this right for me?

Answer honestly. The point is clarity, not a verdict.

  1. 01

I'm using a prescription retinoid right now.

  2. 02

I have a vacation in two weeks.

  3. 03

    I'm hoping for a one-time miracle.
